TOKYO, Sept. 16, 2005 – Every gamer who plays. Every one who used to play. Even those who have yet to play, Nintendo is your bet.

As the cornerstone of his speech today at the Tokyo Game Show’s annual event, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata elaborated on the theme of the company’s aim and proven ability to broaden the population of video game players. Two shining examples highlighted in his keynote include the smash-hit sales of the highly innovative Nintendogs game for the portable Nintendo DS system, and the new controller that will be central to the company’s upcoming console system, code-named Revolution.

Nintendo breaks with more than 20 years of video game history by abandoning the traditional controller held with two hands and introducing an all-new freehand-style unit held with one hand.

The intuitive, pioneering interface allows players to run, jump, spin, slide, shoot, steer, accelerate, bank, dive, kick, throw and score in a way never experienced in the history of gaming.

“The feeling is so natural and real, as soon as players use the controller, their minds will spin with the possibilities of how this will change gaming as we know it today,” explains Satoru Iwata, Nintendo president. “This is an extremely exciting innovation – one that will thrill current players and entice new ones.”

When picked up and pointed at the screen, the controller gives a lightning-quick element of interaction, sensing motion, depth, positioning and targeting dictated by movement of the controller itself.

The controller also allows for a variety of expansions, including a “nunchuk” style analog unit offering the enhanced game-play control hard-core gamers demand.

The response from all major publishers worldwide has been extremely positive. Beyond its other innovations, the new controller gives third parties flexibility, allowing them the option to use as many or as few of the controller features as they desire. In addition, incorporated technology will easily allow games from the NES, SNES, N64 and Nintendo GameCube generations to be controlled in familiar fashion.

Nintendogs for the DS, a virtual and sophisticated dogfest, has taken the gaming world by storm, already selling more than 1.5 million units in Japan and North America combined. The game, just as Iwata believes the Revolution controller will do, is exciting current game players and attracting hordes of new consumers into the playing world.

Bob Ricci - Not A Christmas Album

Parody songs are usually associated with Weird Al, but there is still room for some hilarious parodies. That is where Bob Ricci comes in. He is most well known for his geeky take on Puddle of Mudd's "She Hates Me", titled "Internet Love Song (She Blocked Me)". It's about a loser getting blocked by a chick. Pretty self-explanatory.

Some other great tracks to check out are "Five For One" and "It Could Happen To U2".

"Five For One" starts out with an argument between two Bob clones over what song they are going to sing. One of them sings "Closing Time" by Semisonic, and the other sings "When I Come Around" by Green Day. It is surprisingly well executed.

"It Could Happen To U2"...let me just say that it is about getting "stuck in a zipper" instead of getting stuck in a moment. Yes...stuck in a zipper.

Everyone has heard of Photoshop, but not so many people have it...legally. One thing that puts people off is the price. At around $600, most users just forget about it or pirate it.

Enter The GIMP. The GIMP has been around for about 10 years, and it improves all the time. Some of the improvements are due to the dedicated users who tweak it to their needs. Thanks to Scott Moschella, it is now possible for geeks to get their Photoshop fix through Open Source. He has modified the GIMP to resemble Photoshop, and he's done a pretty fine job at that.

Yahoo! Video Search

I have been trying out Yahoo! Video Search for a while. It takes Yahoo's search technology and searches the web for five different video formats (Windows Media, AVI, Quicktime, MPEG, and Real). It presents the information as thumbnails, and when clicked takes the user to the original site. It gives the option to view the video at the top of the site. Check it out and leave your comments on it.

I recently converted Project:ALF from a VHS to a DVD. I have the MPEG of it as well. Both the DVD and MPEG are commercial-free. If somebody wants it, I may be able to sell either a DVD or the MPEG file.

Super Mario 64 DS

Super Mario 64 DS takes the original game and adds more characters, more challenges, and mini-games.

Being one of the first games for the DS, the graphics are great. It is very smooth and isn't even comparable to any GBA game.

During regular gameplay the touch screen is used mainly as a map, but is used very well in the mini-games.

The sound is really good for the most part. It keeps the original music, but in one of the new levels the music is Sunshine-esque.

The four playable characters are Yoshi, Mario, Luigi, and Wario. The game starts out with the player playing as Yoshi. Yoshi then has to find and rescue Mario. The player then rescues Luigi and Wario. Whenever necessary, the game provides users with the ability to change into a different character.

One new challenge is finding keys to unlock mini-games. Other challenges are created to save the other characters. There are quite a few of the mini-games, and each character has his own set. Each game is worth playing.

Overall it is a great game, and an excellent start for a system with so much potential. So even if you have beaten the original, you should go out and buy this because it provides a totally new experience.

Windows 98 Time Zone Hack

I was messing around with the Registry Editor in Windows 98, and I found out that I could add/modify Time Zones. Keep in mind that this doesn't work on all versions of Windows, and most people won't see this.

BACKUP THE REGISTRY BEFORE COMPLETING

To add Time Zones:
1. Run prompt
2. regedit
3. Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Time Zones
4. Copy an existing location.
5. Create a new key and paste the information.
6. Change the name of the location.
7. Adjust the settings to your liking.
8. Keep asking yourself why you don't have a girlfriend as you set the time of Middle Earth.

The Adventures of Wal-Mart and F***

Wal-Mart is being sued over one instance of a certain 4-letter word that starts with an F and ends with a K on a CD. I have actually bought CDs from Wal-Mart, and a few of them had the F-bomb on them. The Used, Atticus: Dragging The Lake I and II, and SR-71 - Tomorrow all contain the F-word. None of them have that little sticker in the corner that says Parental Advisory. So maybe I should be the one doing the suing.

Another great Firefox extension. I've had it installed for quite a while, but didn't start using it until just recently. downTHEMall! allows the user to download all files from a website. You can filter out which filetypes you want. If you found a site with a bunch of videos, you could set it to download all the video files instead of clicking each individual one. Very handy.

REDMOND, Wash. - Microsoft Corp., stepping up its efforts to compete with rival Google Inc., will offer consumers a preview of its technology for searching the Internet, beginning Thursday.

Microsoft has long offered a search engine on its MSN Web site, but the technology behind it has been powered by subsidiaries of Yahoo Inc. Earlier this year, the Redmond-based software giant conceded that it had missed a large market opportunity by not developing its own search technology, and announced plans to launch its own search engine.

The preview that begins Thursday won't include technology to let people search their own computer desktops as well as the broader Internet. But the company has promised that desktop search functionality by year's end.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Google has already beat Microsoft to the desktop, having launched its desktop search tool in mid-October.
